Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Love it or hate it, that song launched a 1,000 garage bands.
I agree, even though the song itself was a massive rip-off of the Pixies...
I also would include Led Zeplin's "Stairway to Heaven." I mean, don't you know how to play this on guitar? Everyone does. You buying me a beer this week?
Yes sir! Any day after Tuesday. We'll talk Monday about the time/place...
re: Sounds Like Teen Spirit: It's the Pixies remaking Boston's "More Than A Feeling"
Have a listen if you doubt me...
OK, Gotta start at the beginning...
Robert Johnson and Jimmie Rodgers influenced Hank Williams, who begat Elvis, making it possible to find our roots in black American music...Howlin' Wolf. Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker gave us the Stones and just about every other band. Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly = English Invasion, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly (and Rimbaud) gave us Dylan...everything since has just been a variation on a theme.
That's not to dismiss all the great music that is still being made, it's just what it is. As the bard, Bob Dylan, once said, "If there's an original thought out there, I could sure use it right now."
